Frederick R. Harman, age 94, passed into eternal life on Monday, December 3, 2018 in Reading, PA. Fred and his wife, Millie, who preceded him in death, were residents of Penn Hills from 1962 to 2015. They attended Monroeville Assembly of God and were phone prayer counselors for Christian TV in Pittsburgh. They dearly loved their Lord and each other and were married for 68 years. Fred missed Millie terribly - but no longer! Fred lived a remarkable life of devotion to God, family, and country. He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1924. On the same day in 1942 he celebrated his birthday, his graduation from Culver Military Academy, and his commissioning as a 2nd Lt in the US Army. By June 1944 he was part of the Normandy landing in World War II, leading a battalion of field artillery (six M-7s) with the 3rd Armored Division in battle from Normandy until the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded there by an enemy artillery round and received the Purple Heart. After the war he continued in the Army Reserves and finally retired in 1984 as a LTC. By means of the G.I. Bill, Fred earned an engineering degree from Ohio State, where he also met a gorgeous music major, Millicent Mamula, who became his future wife. She was working as a part-time waitress and after meeting her, that restaurant quickly became his favorite eating spot! After college they moved to eastern PA as Fred used his skills for RCA, Sylvania, and Westinghouse Nuclear. His labor-saving studies and redesign saved those companies millions of dollars. Fred's faith in God grew slowly. By observing special interventions that he could only attribute to God, Fred became convinced that God exists, but did not know how to have his own relationship with Him. In 1963 he learned that salvation cannot be earned but comes as a gift because of Jesus' death for our sins. He asked for the gift and received Jesus as his own Lord and Savior. Surviving family are daughter Joyce Harman Eager, married to Dr. J. Michael Eager of Reading, PA, and son Robert, married to Johanna Ness Harman and living in Williamsburg, VA. Fred has 5 grandchildren: Jon Eager, Matthew Eager, Elisabeth Eager Jacobs, Jen Harman, and Anne Harman Solheim, and 9 great-grandchildren. Family will receive guests on Sunday, Dec. 9th from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at MAURICE L. KNEE, LTD. FUNERAL HOME, 7663 Saltsburg Road (across from S & T Bank) Plum, PA 15239, where Fred's "graduation service," as he called it, will be held at 5:00 p.m. The interment service will be on Monday, Dec. 10th at 10:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, PA 15017. Everyone please meet at the cemetery.
